Project Context & Role
As a Designer working at Perkins & Will i/O studio, I am working on designing immersive experiences and advanced interactions using AI for user-tracking spatial analytics. We work with various clients from University of Kansas, University of Michigan and many more to enable real-time data generation for this utilization needs, carbon forecasts, energy mapping and calculating data for Urban Designers.
About i/O Studio
i/o is a subset of Perkins&Will, a global architecture firm focused on creating healthy, sustainable places in which to live, learn, work, play and heal. We focus on researching and developing technologies that help architects, planners, and engineers solve some of today’s biggest challenges in the built environment.
We are a digital startup studio funded by Perkins&Will and Dar Group, focused on building spatial intelligence and experience solutions for our stakeholders and clients.
Product 1: Scorridors for Urban Designers
The challenge lies in determining the appropriate metrics and methods to measure the multifaceted conditions influencing the vitality of our downtown corridors. Moreover, visualizing these effects exacerbates the complexity of the task.
Problem Statement
A vibrant public realm has a connected structure that encourages walkability, an active street wall edge that provides architectural interest and destinations, and a comfortable pedesrian experience that is enjoyable, exciting and safe. Scorridors provides reporting and scenario building tools based on spatial analytics, for a collection of measured data points.

The Scorridor Product Structure
Campus Planner is a tool developed by Perkins&Will that allows our design team to synthesize large amounts of data (i.e. space utilization, course schedules, enrollments, GIS filters), and visualize it on a map. This mapping platform makes it easier to visualize the “full picture” of building assets – their use and occupancy – so it’s possible to quickly understand opportunities for consolidation, for repurposing or disposing of buildings, or ways to accommodate new academic programs as they emerge.
About the Product
Product 2: Campus Planner
Synthesizing my Role
Our team focuses on brainstorming the idea together through sketches and building scenarios that helps us to analyze and iterate the problem statement given by our clients. With our various expertise, we then formulate the wireframe to understand the data representation.
The designers later work towards creating UI designs and defining interactions on map based environment. We then work towards running pilot tests after various iterations to define and complete the task flow of the product. Our usability test across designers of the firm, help us in validating and enhancing our designs for our real-time users.
Project Rationale
The team collaboratively focuses on improving the user experience for the architects to visualize and analyze their data well. The core drivers of my design solution are:
Reducing the discoverability as a pain point in the data reports
Simplifying the complicated excel data
Enhancing the impact and onboarding multiple specialized architects
Narrowing Focus and building modules on a common framework
Design Considerations
Strive for clarity and simplicity in design, making it easy for users to understand and navigate through the interface or product.
Clarity and Simplicity
Consistency
Maintain consistency in design elements such as colors, typography, and layout to create a cohesive and unified user experience.
Gather early feedback from the team when they interact with elements, and ensure that interactive elements afford their intended actions.
Feedback & Affordance
Optimize design elements for performance and speed to ensure a smooth and seamless user experience, minimizing loading times and delays.
Performance and Speed
Design with scalability and flexibility in mind, allowing the design to adapt to different screen sizes, devices, and user needs.
